Any lawyer can take on Pro Bono cases. It just means you are agreeing to work for someone without getting paid. In some places lawyers are obligated to provide a certain number of pro bono hours every year.

You asked: “…Are … Lawyers able to take on Pro Bono cases in the state of New Jersey?…”
The question is this: Are lawyers allowed to work for free in New Jersey?
Sure. Anyone can work for free if they want to. Will they work for free? That’s a whole nother question.

Any attorney is allowed to take on any case for free.
You have to find an attorney willing to help you for free. It’s very difficult to find a pro bono family law attorney. There are simply SO many people who want/need free legal representation.
You can contact your state’s bar association, and your county’s bar association. It would be a complete waste of time to simply begin contacting random attorneys to ask them if they will take your case for free. Your best bet is to get a referral through an agency. Not Dear Abby
