Can having a DUI in Michigan prevent you from getting a teaching certificate?

lgteep asked:

Hi there! A friend of mine just got a DUI and is currently attending Grand Valley State University. She’s currently planning on becoming a teacher, and was curious as to whether or not having the DUI would prevent her from becoming certified. Anyone have any thoughts on this? Thanks so much for your responses!

It will just depend on how selective the school system it…I think she can still get a job in this field she may just have to try a little harder. People make mistakes when they are young and I think most of the world does recognize this…good luck.

I do not believe it will keep her from getting a teaching certificate, but it could affect her ability to be hired. Many teacher position applications ask the question directly: “Have you ever been convicted of a DUI violation?” As another just answered above, it depends on how selective the district is, and probably how long ago the violation occurred. It helps to have done some public service since the violation! Anything to try to prove her character is basically good.

Check with the local school board to find out if a DUI prevents you from being hired as a teacher. It won’t stop you from getting your teaching certificate - that’s purely an academic process, but if you get your certificate and no one will hire you, there’s not much point to it.
