How do I claim child support that I pay on my taxes?

child support
MARGARET B asked:

I’ve been paying child support on my son since 2004. I have never claimed that I pay that support on my taxes. I do not have his social security number or his birth certificate. Is there a way I can do this without his information? I do not have contact with him or his father.

You cannot deduct child support. The reason is because every taxpayer has to support their child. You can deduct alimony or spousal support

  2. rtfm Says:

Child support is not deductible. It is considered part of the everyday cost of raising a child. No parents get to deduct any of that cost, whether they are married, single, custodial, or non-custodial.

  3. Tom Says:

The only reduction you can get is to claim the child as a deduction if you are paying more than half of his expenses for the year.

You don’t, it’s not deductible. Alimony paid, on the other hand, is deductible.

  5. Judy Says:

Child support isn’t deductible. So you don’t claim it on your taxes.

  6. Gary Says:

Sorry you can not claim child support on your taxes. The receiver of your child support does not claim it on their taxes as income. Child support has nothing to do with taxes.
