First start by googling family law and wherever you live - find some basic information. Then look for papers and journal articles and critical commentaries etc on family law, talking about the pros and cons. Examine some cases and the outcomes. Then talk about how the laws and the decisions made are fair or not for the family, and how they help or don’t help society. I’m not sure what level you’re studying at, so I don’t know how much depth you have to go into. If in doubt as your teacher for some resources to help you get started.

Narrow your focus to one target group - battered wives, for example - and examine the law where you live in terms of protecting them and kids. I think you’ll find the law favors batterers. Insufficient resources are allocated by ANY culture, it seems, to adequately protect women who are under threat of repeated attack. Check the stats and I think you’ll find that guys who SAY they’re going to kill spouse do, in fact, go through with it.

The key with an assignment like this is to start narrow and expand as you explore the implications of, in this case, inadequate legislation.
