Is it against australian law to sell raffle tickets for the purpose of helping my family?

Im a single mum of 2 young children. I dont make much money and am finding it hard to afford anything beyond general living expenses. I had an idea that i could make up a few gift baskets and sell raffles tickets and use the profits to buy chrissy presents for my kids.

Yes, it is against the law.You must be a registered charity or club or association. There are quite severe penalties including jail sentences for running unlicenced raffles or charities. You must also be registered with the tax office. Redstar

As Red said - you need to be registered in order to sell raffle tickets for anything - the is a fee to be paid and the competition lotteries commission has to be involved in the process. Private individuals are not permitted to hold raffles. skcattley
