Is it against US law for a Family member to be another family member’s doctor?

Rebecca asked:

My dad is a doctor, but I remember when I was a kid- on all the official papers he put a friend of his who was also a doctor as my official physician and would have his friend sign everything even though it was my dad who did all the treatments and shots and things. Did he do this because he wasn’t legally allowed to be my doctor? What about other family members? I know of a plastic surgeon who did all the plastic surgery for his wife.

Yeah it is illegal to be family primary physician for a couple of reason. Cause in some cases people have signed off on stuff for their own family that they shouldn’t, for example your dad signed of on your shots, even though he didn’t give them to you, because he didn’t think you should have them for whatever reason. Now since you have to have shots to go to school, but because you didnt get them you could get or give something that was suppose to be given with shot. Can cheat around things, which in some case some people shouldnt be allowed to medically. Another example is if your dad gave you a physical and signed off on an athletic waiver (So you could play) saying you were medically okay to play, then It could cause big problems, cause possible you could get hurt or injured. However the surgery things different, nothing illegal about doing surgery on family cause its that surgery, because no way you could cheat around things, cause other people around, as well as surgeons do decide meds or anything or sign off on health stuff. Though it is slightly unorthodox to do surgery on people you know. So yeah D M
