Maybe your other plans include sitting staring at the TV in the privacy of your own home. If it's a cookout, maybe you can be outside the whole time. Bring lawn chairs and offer to eat outside (by yourselves if you have to). As for the flowers, skip them. Mom would appreciate them, but I know she would rather see you in person, even for a short time. Be assertive, not aggressive. I'ts only one day, after all. Save face.
