Where is it law limiting the maximum number of dogs in a family to 4?

family law
Nedra E asked:

Some woman posted a traumatic story of having to give up 2 dogs as they owned 6 and she stated state law only allowed a family to own 4. I don’t know of any place where this is STATE law as she said, but I did find there is such a law in Haverstraw, NY. Are there other places with such a law?

I am in Florida. It is not a state law, but certain counties here have a limit on the number of animals (not just dogs) you can own without acreage.

all towns have a limit on the amount of dogs u can have. a woman in my area had 3 dogs and someone from the city noticed it and told her she can only have 2 so now the poor woman has to get rid of one of her dogs. there r laws that limit the amount of dogs that u can have. in my town its 2 in some other towns its 4 it depends on where u live

Every county has a limit on the number of dogs you can keep on one property without a kennel license. It varies depending on where you are, but there is a limit everywhere.

Yes it is law in alot of states, so check your local state regulations for this law…and most states will enforce it..

and to find out in your area, call your local Humane Society..

unless you have a license and run a kennel, most states wont allow a family to have but only so many dogs

  5. THE MIST Says:

Out in Southern California people are only allowed to have 3 dogs.

The Humane Society has a rule where you can only have.

    2 cats and one dog
    or
    2 dogs and one cat
    or
    3 cats
    0r
    3 dogs

Some states it is by County. Sacramento County you can have four dogs…. If you want more than four dogs, you must apply for a permit and be propertly setup as a kennel. From what I understand, the County has made the requirements to obtain the permit more difficult to obtain.

Response to THE MIST - when I lived in the Palm Springs area, I had 5 dogs and all were registered with the city.
Again, California is by County :)

not in my area but i don’t think most of the time it is a state law, at least in Michigan, i think most of the time it is local ordinances, for towns townships city’s, etc. but each state might be different

  9. FishStory Says:

It’s usually a local ordinance. Not all towns have a limit on the number of pets allowed.

I read that poor woman’s story and quite frankly, I’d be moving. No way would I give up one of my dogs.

I don’t know as far as state but the humane society I volunteer at has a whole list of all the surrounding cities and the limit of dogs and cats that is allowed in a household. General living out futher more are allowed. I really don’t know how they decide it, I live in the city [St. Louis] and a household can have 4 dogs here. I know from glancing at the sheet there were some cities in the st. Louis county that only allowed up to 3 dogs.

I can understand why they have limits but if someone has enough space and can properly care for a pack of say 10 dogs. I really don’t see why they shouldn’t honestly with all the dogs in shelters. Why prevent a good home just because they have more animals. If all the dogs weren’t getting good care or proper attention I could understand.

Many cities limit the number of dogs…I have never heard of a STATE doing so. I missed her question, but most of those laws have loopholes…she could apply for a kennel license or her dogs may have been “grandfathered in” if she had them before the law took effect.

There is no law in my city, county, or state limiting the number of dogs a person can own. My city is very tough on personal responsibility of dog owners, though. There are stiff fines for not cleaning up after your dogs, not licensing, allowing barking, tethering, allowing your dog to roam the neighborhood, etc. I guess the city council has decided that it’s a matter of personal freedom to decide how many dogs you can handle, and if you can’t take care of them, that’s when they come down on you.
